Jordan Peterson claims Australians to choose Covid or a 'police state'

High-profile psychologist and commentator Jordan Peterson says Australians are being forced to choose between a Covid epidemic or a police state, and says he would prefer the ‘relatively low risk’ of the virus.

Dr Peterson tweeted the question to his nearly 2million followers on Thursday, adding in his opinion that a police state was becoming increasingly certain.

‘Australians (and perhaps all in the west): are you being asked to choose between the dangers of a police state vs the dangers of Covid?’ Dr Peterson said.

‘I would certainly prefer the relatively low risk of the latter to the increasingly unpleasant certainty of the former.

Opinion,’ he said and tagged former Australian deputy Prime Minister John Anderson.

Earlier on Thursday, John Anderson tweeted an opinion piece by Peter Kurti from the Centre for Independent Studies in which he argued lockdowns were ‘fracturing the fabric of society’.

The CIS is a libertarian think-tank which promotes ‘free enterprise economy’ and a ‘free society under limited government’.

Commenters on Dr Peterson’s tweet were mixed, with some agreeing they would rather live with the virus in the community.

‘Australian here.

I would much rather have the disease than live under these lockdowns. Most family and friends have said they are more afraid of the government and their response than Covid,’ one person said.

‘As a 22 year old young man I would prefer the second option. Covid will go away easier than an authoritarian state in the next 10 years,’ agreed another.

However, others argued the problem was not that simple.

‘It’s not lowest binary options fees.

There are confounding factors that contribute to this equation. Namely vaccine hesitancy,’ one person argued.

‘When did you get so dramatic?

Telling people to get vaxed is similar to creating a new law in order to protect society and millions of lives. It is nothing like a police state,’ another said.

‘Would you and those agreeing forfeit your right to ER admittance,’ added a third.

The outspoken Canadian academic and author has gained worldwide attention in recent years, beginning with his opposition to government enforcement of the use of neutral gender pronouns for transgender people, saying it was over-reach by government to compel speech.

He many media appearances turned him into a champion of opposition to ‘identity politics’ and he wrote a best-selling book Rules for Life which focused on the need for individual responsibility and empowerment.

Dr Peterson has not been the only foreign commentator to question the severe Australian repsonse to its relatively few Covid cases.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson this week slammed Australia’s ongoing lockdowns saying the the ‘totalitarian’ country’s draconian restrictions were like a ‘science-fiction’ film.

Recent anti-lockdown protests were held in Melbourne and Sydney attended by thousands against public health orders – prompting a large-scale response by police and many arrests (pictured: a man is arrested at a rally in Sydney last weekend)

‘In Australia, the government has implemented total lockdowns nationwide, and imposed martial law to enforce those lockdowns,’ the host said on his TV show Tucker Carlson Tonight.

‘What’s the justification for this?

Here are the numbers: from mid-July to last week, the entire nation of Australia — that’s 25 million people — has averaged about 1.5 Covid deaths per day.’

He also mentioned the police manhunt for a Covid-positive patient Anthony Karam, 27, who allegedly refused to self-isolate despite receiving a positive Covid test.

‘Was he a mass killer?

No. He dared to venture outside of his apartment complex. For doing that, the media showed surveillance footage of him entering his elevator and sneezing without covering his face,’ Carlson said.

He also laid into bureaucrats about a bizarre incident in outback Australia where a dog pound shot its animals after the area was given stay-at-home orders.

‘In one recent case, authorities executed rescue dogs — shot them to death — to prevent Australian dog lovers from travelling to adopt them.

‘Leaving your home is not allowed, so they just killed the dogs.

And the population put up with it. They were told they had to.’

And Carlson also railed against the heavy-handedness of officers during recent capital city protests and scolded Premier Daniel Andrews for telling Victorians they are forbidden from watching the sunset.

Mr Andrews had previously said going outdoors to watch the sunset was ‘not in the spirit’ of Covid restrictions.

Carlson said the rules – designed to save lives – were lunacy.

‘Scolded for watching the sunset.

Executing rescue dogs. A nationwide manhunt for a guy who sneezed alone in an elevator. No one in Australia is laughing at this. No one is standing back far enough to see the lunacy on display,’ he said.
